Dior Unveils New Mini D Watches

The jewelry and watch brand Dior has recently introduced its novel La Mini D watch. It has been launched in two versions.

The first interpretation, called La Mini D de Dior “Snow Set” Diamonds, is available with a 19 mm case, rendered in white gold. It is fitted with a bezel and a crown, illuminated by the play of dazzling diamonds. The water-resistance of the case is down to 30 meters.

The case frames a white gold dial, generously paved with “snow-set” diamonds. Sweeping smoothly over the dial are polished dauphine hands, also manufactured from white gold.

This delicate Dior creation relies on a quartz ETA movement, which provides the functions of hours and minutes. The watch is mounted on a black satin strap, which terminates in a white gold ardillon buckle with a setting of “snow set” sparkling diamonds.

Omega Reveals Olympic Collection Vancouver 2010 Limited Edition Watch

2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver will be the 24th time that Omega has served in the capacity of Official Timekeepers to the Olympic Games. At Omega’s first timekeeping assignment for the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany in 1936, a lone Omega technician brought 27 stopwatches which were used to time each event at the Games. Seventy-four years later in Vancouver, Omega is deploying 220 timekeeping professionals and engineers supported by 290 local volunteers. They are bringing some 250 tons of equipment for timekeeping, on-venue results and TV services – it will be the largest timekeeping contingent in the history of winter sport.

To commerate this 2010 Winter Olympics, Omega has introduced the limited edition Omega Seamaster Professional 300m Diver Vancouver 2010 watch. Produced in a limited edition of 2010 pieces, the watch features an annodized red metal bezel insert and white dial signifying the colors of the Canadian flag. And, as in previous Olympic Collection models, it also features a central sweep seconds hand with a counterpoise bearing the four intertwined Olympic rings.

Overall, this watch has a very clean look with nice contrasting colors in the dial and bezel. It should be a popular watch and look for it to sell out very quickly.

Issey Miyake Futuristic Watch

Japanese designers have never failed to amaze us especially when it comes to their designs, whether they are applied on sneakers or watches. The Issey Miyake SILAP010 Twelve watch is a case in point.

The Issey Miyake SILAP010 Twelve watch was designed by Tokujin Yoshioka, produced by Issey Miyake and developed by Seiko Instruments of Japan. It is thus a true-blue Japanese product.

Naoto Fukasawa designed Issey Miyake’s line of “Twelve” watches with the intention of eliminating all markings from the face to include the numbers. If you notice, the watch face has twelve sides, and each of the twelve angles represent the hour markers. It is actually a complete timepiece in itself, with the addition of the hour and minute hands.

The Issey Miyake SILAP010 Twelve watch comes in a stainless steel case measuring 38 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The leather bracelet is a good match to the white face. The watch has a water resistance level of up to 99 feet and is powered by a Quartz movement.

Bulgari Brings Back the Tubogas Snake Watch

Isn’t it said that if you live long enough, “everything eventually comes back into fashion again”? I think that was originally said of bell-bottom pants in the 1970’s. Well, it’s happening again with luxury watches. But, this time, you won’t have to wait another 20 years or so to relive the past. Bulgari has brought back the snake-like Tubogas bracelet in their 125th Anniversary Serpenti Snake Watch Collection, which will be formally introduced at the 2010 Basel Fair on March 18.

The original Serpenti snake design debuted in 1949. The stylized serpent bracelet had coils either joined by the tubogas technique or in gold mesh wrapped around the wrist. In 1962, Elizabeth Taylor immortalized the sexy snake-like Bulgari bracelet-watch while working on the movie “Cleopatra” in Rome. In Taylor’s case, the coiled bracelet was constructed out of 14kt yellow gold and the stylized serpent head in white gold set with round and marquis-shaped diamonds. Two emeralds were set into the eyes, and the serpent head opens to reveal the hidden timepiece.

Eventually, the snake-like Tubogas watches became synonymous with Bulgari, and Bulgari continued to produce the style until the last 1990’s. Nearly 10 years later, Bulgari has decided to bring back the “bell-bottoms” of the watch industry.

The present line of Bulgari Serpenti Snake watches are available in either 18kt white or rose gold with the familiar Tubogas coiled bracelet. However, the serpent’s head that traditionally functioned as the watch case has a more contemporary look this time around with an angular shape that more closely resembles the real animal. Models are available with a variety of different “scales” (gemstones such as onyx, pink coral, mother of pearl, lavender jade) on the bracelet, and diamonds set into the case and bracelet.

British Gentlemen Do Not Wear Jewellery

A small unobtrusive gold family signet ring on the little finger of the left hand, perhaps, and gold cufflinks, but otherwise any personal ostentation is considered flash, foreign or naff. Except for watches.

The best way for a Briton to show his sense of taste and style is through his choice of watch. It’s the ultimate chic male status symbol, like an Aston Martin Volante or ‘midnight’ Canaletto, except that you can carry it on your wrist, the top just visible from below your perfectly turned French cuff. We are all slaves to the iron dictates of what Kipling dubbed ‘the unforgiving minute’, so watches are practically impossible to live without unless one is a farmer, hermit or hippy. But that does not explain the beguiling aesthetic of the different brands.

There is the sporty Rolex Submariner beloved of James Bond and supposedly worn by divers and skiers, a rugged watch that has its dressy counterpart in the Datejust.

Dressier still is the Cartier American Tank, the only watch which really counts more as a gem than a chronometer. (Arguments abound as to how the word ‘Tank’ originated to describe this watch. ) Then there is the fantastically complicated Patek Philippe, which prides itself on being a potential heirloom, more like a family trust than a means for telling the time. (Of the 15 most expensive watches ever sold at auction, 14 have been Patek Philippes.) Other brand names ooze a combination of (usually Swiss) reliability and sophistication.
